Dear Ma,

The foreman says the fire started in the carding room, same as the one in '93, and the one before that, which the older hands still talk about with their caps in their fists. I have told him I will not be going back up the north stair. He laughed and said nobody asks a lad what he will go back up. Well, I am asking myself, and the answer is no.

Mr Hurst has offered me a place in the drawing office in Bradford, eleven shillings a week more, with windows that open. I have written to say yes. The postal order is enclosed for the bootmaker, since you said my good boots were pinching the cobbler's conscience and yours too.

Last night I sat on a bale of pit props in the yard with my back to the wall and counted the stars over the chimneys, the way you taught me when I could not sleep as a boy. There was one bright one low down above the gasworks, and I decided it was mine. I have copied the words I kept trying to write all week onto the back of this sheet, and under them I have drawn a small star, so you will know which one I mean.

Never again, Ma. I mean the stair, and the smoke, and the wages docked for a cough. I do not mean you, or home. Light the lamp in the front window on Sunday. I will be on the late train.

Your loving son, Tom
