Small feather tattoo on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather is tattooed on the upper shoulder, angled diagonally with its tip pointing towards the top of the shoulder. The feather uses fine dark linework with soft grey shading along its barbs. The photograph is backlit, so the skin and the dark top below the shoulder appear in silhouette against a bright background.

The keeper at Skerry Dock swore the feather had drifted down through the dome vents, but I had worked the rookery shafts for eleven years and knew nothing up there had wings any more. Still, it was grey and as long as my forearm, with a dark vane that caught the lamplight whichever way I turned it. I pinned it inside my collar before the inspectors could log it as salvage.

Our crew called the seventh ring the Hollows because the hab walls there were thin and the wind sang through every seam. Nobody went there without a reason. Mine was Ilse, who ran the greenhouse pumps and had a laugh like a dropped spanner. She had asked me once whether the air beyond the hull would hold a feather up, and I had said it would, if you were patient. We argued about it for a whole shift at the airlock glass, sealed in our suits, while the pressure gauges ticked.

When the seal failed on Ring Seven, Ilse was on the far side of the pumps. I reached her with the spare line and the last clean canister, and I held her hand through the glass while the alarms went quiet one by one. Afterwards the station gave me a commendation and a bunk nearer the core. Nothing on the station may leave in a pocket, so I went to the surgery bay and asked for the feather to be kept with me another way.

The surgeon asked whether I wanted it black or grey. I said grey, the colour of a thing that has been out in the weather. When the dressing came off, the feather lay angled upward, its tip turned towards home, as if it had only just come down and was waiting for the draught to lift it again.
