Nine pen sketches of line and dot tattoo designs
Black and grey · Flash
A three by three grid of photographs of pen drawings on white paper. Each panel shows a single linear motif, including chevron and feather bands, twisted and spiral lines, dotted bands, a leaf with chevron fill, and two leaves filled with circles and dots. The work uses fine black ink with dense hatching and repeated small shapes, and the composition is even and flat.

Her grandson Piers came aboard at Tewkes Lock with a coil of new rope over his shoulder and a grin that did not reach his eyes. He had sold the willow cuttings off the bank to a man from upriver, and the man had sold them on, and now the banks slumped into the water with nothing to hold them. 'The river is owed something it was promised,' Hester said. She untied the old mooring line and coiled it in wide, patient turns, the way her mother had taught her, until the rope lay on the deck like a spiral of smoke.
That night the water rose without rain. Hester went out in her nightdress with a lantern and a bowl of barley, and she walked the towpath folding fallen leaves into chevrons of wet bark as she went. At every bend she set down a black stone on the bank. By the ninth stone the river had gone quiet, and the lantern showed a line of pale roots reaching out of the mud like a path.
In the morning Piers found her asleep against the tiller, the rope still coiled beside her. 'Did the river take its toll?' he asked. 'It took what was owed,' she said, 'and it left us the rest.' She pointed at the willows already sprouting green along the bank.
