Small fish outline on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single small fish outline sits on the inner wrist, drawn as one continuous black line with a forked tail. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The skin is pale and the ink is black against it, and the tattoo sits off-centre in a plain, close crop.

The fish had appeared on the waiting room window every morning since the new year, one curved line and a little forked tail traced in the frost, and every morning Dennis Hale rubbed it away with the cuff of his coat before the first train rattled in. He was the only porter left at Saltergate Halt, and he had firm views on graffiti, even the tidy sort that never quite meant anything.

Then the snow lifted and the glass stayed clear, and he found himself checking for the mark anyway. On the third Tuesday a young woman stepped off the 6.14 with a rucksack and a map folded to the wrong county. She asked when the bus to Ferrow left. He told her the bus had stopped running in October, and she laughed, not unkindly, and sat on the bench to work out her next move. She turned a carpenter's pencil over and over in her fingers while she read the timetable.
When the next train came in she still hadn't moved, so Dennis walked over to tell her the last connection went at five. She showed him the map. In the margin, beside a cross for the chapel and a ring for the quarry, she had drawn the same small fish, quick and certain, as though it were a street sign.
He looked at it for a long time. Then he took the pencil from her, wrote the bus times in neat capitals across the back of her map, and went out to the platform to wait for the five o'clock with her, the frost already starting to form on the glass behind them.
