Watercolour-style poppies on a limb
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
Two red poppies with loose black outlines and green stems run up a limb, with a smaller bud below the upper flower. The shading is soft and washed, with red fading into the skin and visible splashes of colour around the flowers. A paper sheet bearing a matching poppy design sits to the left of the tattooed limb against a metallic background.

The abbot wants the poppies finished before the feast of St Hilda, and you have spent three nights failing at the red. Brother Anselm mixed it from madder and a little lead white, and every time you lift the brush the wash runs ahead of the line, pooling at the edge of the petal like spilt wine on the scriptorium table.

Your hand has learned to trust the water instead of fighting it. You stop trying to keep the black outline inside the red. You let the ink wander off the stem and drift into the margin, and you let the green thin into the paper until the stalk seems to dissolve. Outside, the infirmary garden is full of the real thing, nodding on thin stems where Brother Piers has sown them for years. He says the bees ignore them. He says the sick take the petals steeped in honey.
On the third night the shutters rattle and a spoiled sheet of vellum slides off the desk. It lands face up on the flagstones, and in the lamplight you see your own poppies on it, two heads and a closed bud, blurred where a cup of water went over. They look nothing like the book's careful saints. They look alive, almost wet. You pick the sheet up, and you do not dry it.
At matins the abbot pauses over the open page and says nothing for a long moment. Then he turns it toward the window, and the red takes the morning light the way a cheek takes colour in the cold, softly, spreading outward. 'Leave the rest of the margins as they are,' he says. 'Let it bleed.'
