A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Edith Pargeter had been wrong about the Hadley raffle for eleven years running, and on the Saturday of the summer fete she intended to say so from the top of the tombola. She stood by the tea urn with her spectacles pushed up into hair set so hard it could have stopped a cricket ball, a cupcake held in one gloved hand, its sprinkles bright as a row of boiled sweets.

"Gerald Coombs," she said, to nobody in particular. The chairman of the parish council, who was thirty yards off arguing with a bouncy castle, looked up as though he had heard his name in a bad dream. Edith had spent the morning icing sixty-two cakes in the church hall, and every one had been judged by a committee that wore its opinions like scarves. Her lemon and elderflower had been placed third behind a Victoria sponge made by a man who had never once turned on an oven.

She lobbed the cupcake underarm. It sailed over the coconut shy, clipped the brim of a straw hat, and landed with a soft, damning splat on the judges' table. Gerald took the rest of it on the lapel. Sprinkles rained down over the printed programme and the raffle tickets and a small dog that had been sleeping under the trestle.

Edith dusted off her glove. "It was a run by fruiting," she told the stunned crowd, "and you were all very lucky I used a cake." Then she walked back to her urn, poured herself a cup of stewed tea, and did not look at the results board again.
