Woman with teacup and banner quote

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo shows an older woman with glasses and her hair in a curled updo, raising a teacup in one hand. Below her, a scroll banner carries the lettering IT WAS A RUN-BY FRUITING, with a pendant visible at her neck. The lines are bold and uniform with no shading, and the design fills the frame against plain skin.

Mrs Ottoline Creswell heard every one of them out in the back booth of the Copper Kettle, cup held level, while I stacked scones on the counter and tried not to look as though I was listening. The vicar's wife said it was the Hollins boy. Mr Pike swore it was a fox with a grudge against the judging committee. Mrs Dunning wanted it known that the damsons came from her grandmother's tree, which was fed by the old well, which was why they were sweeter than anyone else's.

When they had finished, Mrs Creswell set her cup in its saucer with a small click. "It was a run-by fruiting," she said. "Somebody walked past that stall at the right speed, with a basket on the right arm, and nobody looked up from the bunting. Plums do not walk off on their own, Dennis, and neither does a jar."

She asked me to fetch the cream from the back, and while I was gone she tipped her saucer onto a paper napkin. Three damson stones lay there, polished clean. I went to the cellar hatch, which somebody had left open, and found a jar on the shelf beside Mrs Dunning's own preserves, its label turned to face the wall. I came back up without a word. Mrs Creswell stirred her tea, which had gone cold, and asked me to bring another pot.
