Portrait with laurel wreath on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bold traditional portrait of a woman with short dark hair, round glasses and a white lace collar over a black robe, with pink shading on her cheeks. She is framed by green and pink laurel branches, and a ribbon banner across the bottom reads SUPREME above a small orange star. Thick black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills define the piece, which is shown fresh on the outer upper arm against a plain background.

Dear Tom,

The laurel by the shed has finally gone over the fence into Mr Okafor's runner beans, and I have spent the whole of Saturday with secateurs and a face like a wet Tuesday. You will say I should have let it be. But Mum's lace collar is still folded in the drawer where she left it, and I cannot look at that bush without thinking she would have had it cut back before it swallowed the water butt.
The retirement do for Judge Hale is on Friday, and the clerks asked me to make a wreath for the table. Nobody else would touch the job, so I went out with the shears and cut a long green whip of it, thinking how absurd we all are, passing a sprig round like a prize at sports day. Then I found the scrap of paper in my coat pocket from the last time he sat on the bench. He had scribbled on the back of a witness list: SUPREME in capitals, underlined twice, with a little star in the margin. I still do not know what he meant by it. Perhaps he was only bored.
I wove the leaves round a ring of wire and left a gap at the bottom for the star. I did not put the paper in with it. I put it in the seed tin on the windowsill, under the sweet pea packets, where the mice cannot reach. The wreath is in the boot of the car now, and I am ashamed of how much I want to see his face when he reads that word, which was never meant for him at all.
Your loving sister, Nell
