Om mandala tattoo on the chest
Geometric · Chest · Colour · Photo
A circular mandala sits on the upper chest, with a green Om symbol at its centre surrounded by layered red and pink petal shapes. Green scrolling leaves and yellow accents form the outer ring, and the mandala is built from solid fills with defined outlines. The image is a close crop showing only the lower face, neck and upper chest, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The compass card is still damp when the bosun hands it over, and the ink has bled into the petals so the red looks like rust. You were told to copy the star chart for the mate's cabin before the Cape, nothing fancy, just the bearings in a ring. Instead you have drawn eight lotus petals around the rose, and in the middle, because your hand wanted it there, the curled syllable your grandmother hummed over the washing line.

Mr Okafor, the second mate, studies it for a long time. He does not like decoration on navigation work, and the Indian Ocean has been worrying the ship for nine days, so the galley is half empty and the men are short-tempered. He asks what the green is for. You tell him that the sea doesn't care about bearings if the helmsman has no centre to steer from. He says nothing, but he carries the sheet into the chartroom and pins it beside the sextant tables.
The wind drops the next morning and the swell flattens into a long grey sheet. The galley boy reports that the mate has been sitting with the card since dawn, tracing the petals with one finger and pencilling small corrections into the margins, none of them in the official almanac. At noon he sends for you. The fix he has worked out puts them forty miles east of the dead reckoning, and it is right, because the coast lights come up exactly where the outer ring said they would.
At Mombasa the card is soft as cloth from handling, and he keeps it in his oilskin. When the apprentices ask about the green symbol at its heart, he tells them it marks the one place on any chart where the ship is not, and that a navigator who knows where that is will never be lost.
