One step at a time script on ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is raised in a car, showing the outer ankle and top of the foot. The tattoo is a black script phrase reading One step at a time, set in a flowing, slightly slanted hand with fine, even linework and solid ink. The plain grey car interior and warm natural light sit behind the foot, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Mags, the signal at Carrowmore has been down since Tuesday, so you'll have to forgive the handwriting, which is me writing on my knee on the platform bench with the 6.14 cancelled and the tea urn gone cold. The stationmaster, a man called Desmond with a moustache like a hedge, says the replacement bus will be here by four, or by the time the rain stops, whichever comes later. I told him I've been waiting on this line since the spring and he laughed as though I'd made a joke.

You asked me in your last letter whether I'd finally sorted the business with the solicitor. I have. The papers are in my handbag, folded in thirds the way Dad used to fold his timetables, and I keep touching them to make sure they haven't escaped. The woman in the office said the house will be ready by October, and I said I'd believe it when I could walk through the front door without wading past the boxes. She said, quite kindly, that most people manage it one step at a time. I nearly threw my hat at her.
So here is my confession. Last night in the guest house I sat on the edge of the bed and wrote that very phrase on the back of a beer mat, because I'd taken to saying it aloud whenever the bus shuddered over the bridge. I'm going to have it done when I get home, small and neat, somewhere I can see it when I'm stuck. I'll send you a photograph if I can get the lighting right. Don't laugh.
The bus has just pulled in, its lights smeared by the rain. Desmond is waving his flag as though we're all setting sail. I'll post this at the next town, so keep your kettle on. Love, Nell.
