Fine line black tattoo of an open mouth with dripping lower lip and the words What's love got to do with it? inside, on the upper arm.

Open mouth with text on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink outline of an open mouth shows teeth, a tongue and drips running from the lower lip, with the words WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? written across the mouth. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits centred on the outer upper arm against a pale skin tone and a blurred indoor background.

Tuesday, half four. The ovens were already roaring when Dilys came in, shaking rain off her coat and singing the same line through her teeth, the one about love and what it has to do with anything. I told her to fetch the tins before she sang the flour into a lump.

The bakery across the square had sold out of lemon loaves by seven last week, and Dilys had decided this was a matter of the heart. She has never once lost an argument she could make into a song. I let her go on while I scored the sourdough, the blades nicking the skin in quick straight lines, and she told me the other baker had cheated by using his grandmother's tin, which is not a crime anyone has ever been charged with.

At six the lemon syrup sugared on the tray before it had cooled, and we sat on the sacks by the back door with our tea going cold, the sky over the bins turning the colour of weak milk. She asked me the question properly then, not singing, just asking, the way you ask a doctor. I said as far as I could tell it had to do with knowing when dough is ready. You press it with one finger and watch whether it springs back slowly enough to be trusted.

We pulled the trays at seven. A thread of glaze had run over the edge of the last tin and set on the rack in two thin lines, like something spilt and then forgiven. Dilys licked her thumb, looked at it for a long while, and said, well, that's something. I wrote it down so I would not have to remember it.
