Cheshire Cat grin with teal eyes

Other · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of the Cheshire Cat's wide grin with teal-coloured eyes, a pink nose and a row of small white teeth. The words we're all mad here run in a small, dark serif font beneath the smile. The grin is shaded in soft greys and sits centrally in the frame against a plain, pale skin background.

Brother Anselm had kept the silence of St Oswin's for thirty-one winters, and in all that time the grin had never once blinked. It hung above the refectory door, teeth first, the rest of the cat having wandered off sometime before the bells were recast. The abbot called it a draught. The novices called it the best company in the house.

Then the new prior arrived, a precise man from the south who counted the candles and wrote everything down. He ordered the grin scraped from the lintel. Brother Anselm climbed the ladder with the scraper himself, because he had promised the old prior he would never let the thing be touched by a stranger. Halfway up, the grin spoke. "You know we're all mad here," it said, "and only the mad ones can see me."

Anselm did not argue. He had heard that line in his dreams since he was a boy. He sat on the top rung and told the grin about the prior's ledgers, the cold porridge, and the bread that would not rise in February. The grin listened the way cats listen, eyes half shut, their teal going soft as dusk over the Fens.

When the prior came in with his lantern, he found the refectory empty and the lintel bare. There was only a faint smile in the dust, and a monk asleep on the ladder with a quill behind his ear, dreaming of a cat who had finally agreed to stay.
