Orange slice on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single orange wedge sits on the inside of a forearm, with five orange segments filled in and a curved black outline following the rind. Short black strokes fan out from the outer edge, giving the piece a fine line look against the pale skin. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph with a soft blurred background.

Rain came sideways under the awnings of Thornbury Market, and Ivy Cole had been pricing oranges since seven with her thumbs gone numb. The crate from Valencia was late. Customers came in the wet and left in the wet, and nobody bought anything whole any more. They wanted it cut, bagged and sealed in plastic for the bus.

A man in a yellow cagoule stopped at the stall and asked for one orange, peeled, which Ivy thought rude until he explained that his daughter had been sick all week and would only eat fruit that looked like something. Ivy took the small knife from the drawer under the scales. She halved the fruit, quartered it, then sliced a single wedge and laid it on a square of greaseproof paper. She lifted the membrane with a fingernail so the segments fanned out, and the man laughed, because the black pith at the rind had curled into a row of lashes and the whole thing looked like a wink.
He tried to pay with a fiver and a bus pass. Ivy waved both away and heard herself say something she hadn't planned: that her mother had sold fruit on this same pitch in 1974, and had always cut the first orange of a wet day for the first person who asked, because the rain took half the custom and gave back a story. The man turned the wedge over in his fingers. Water ran off the awning in a thin silver line.
When he had gone, Ivy wiped the knife and put it back under the scales. Then she took the next orange, sliced it, and set the wedge on the counter facing the street, the rind bright as a lamp, watching the rain blink at her through its lashes.
