Simple cat face on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a cat's face, drawn as a single outline with pointed ears, two almond-shaped eyes and a simple triangular nose and mouth. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on a pale inner upper arm, with a grey sleeveless top visible on the left.

Right, sit down, you're letting the heat out. Mind the umbrella, it's been in here since the Tuesday the 4:10 ran forty minutes late and half of Platform Two was wet through. Now what did you lose? A glove, a bag, a child's shoe? No, I can see from your face it's something you can't name, which is the usual. We get a lot of those. Tom keeps a drawer for them.

There's a cardboard box on the top shelf that nobody has claimed in eleven years. I put it there myself. Inside is a cat, or the drawing of one. Someone pinned it to the noticeboard by the ticket office, a little face on a scrap of brown paper, pointed ears, eyes like two closed almonds, a nose like a stitch. Underneath, in pencil: Mr Biscuit, answers to nothing, last seen boarding at Halton Road. Nobody rang. Nobody came in. I kept it anyway, because a drawing that sharp deserves a home.
You want to know what happened to the cat. Well, I had a theory once, a cat that rides the trains from one end of the line to the other looking for a particular lap. But the drawing doesn't say that. It only says it looks like it knows where it's going and has decided not to tell you. I still take it out on wet Tuesdays and look at it. The eyes never change. That's the thing about a line made in one go, it doesn't have to decide anything again. Now, your umbrella. Let's have a look at the label.
