Small geometric tattoo of a black linework origami bird over a solid green triangle on the inner forearm, near a gold watch strap.

Origami bird over green triangle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of an origami-style bird in thin black outline sits on the forearm, with its folded geometric planes drawn as straight lines. A solid mint-green triangle sits behind and below the bird, filling the space beneath its wings. The plain pale skin and grey painted wooden boards in the background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The chart table is cluttered with the last of the coffee tins, and the second mate has given up complaining about the paper I keep spoiling. I've been folding birds again. Mr Okafor, the cook, showed me the trick on Tuesday's watch: a square of spare chart turned and turned until the wings stand up on their own. He says the old hands folded them for their wives and then forgot their wives' names, which I think is a lie, but a good one.

The bird I've made for you is the grey one, the sort that flies out past the harbour wall and doesn't come back. I've pinned it above my bunk beside a green triangle I cut from the flag Captain Morrow gave us when we passed the Azores. He's a stingy man, so I thought it only fair to use something of his. The green is the only colour we've seen in three weeks, apart from the weed on the hull at Lisbon, and I didn't want the bird sitting on nothing.

Mind the gate on Dock Road when you go back. Ma says the hinge has rusted through and you'll have to lift it to get it shut. Tell her I'm eating properly, and that the next bird is for the kitchen window, where the light comes in at six and makes the paper look like it's about to lift off the sill.

Your brother, Danny
