Fine line triangle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm, with the sleeve of a knitted jumper pushed up above the wrist. The tattoo is a small inverted triangle with a single horizontal line crossing through it, drawn in thin, even black linework. The image is black and white against a textured pale wall, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

The rain has been coming sideways down the market lanes since seven, and by ten the awnings sag like wet bread. You are the only stallholder still standing, because the brass balance on your trestle has to be seen to read true before anyone goes home. It sits on a square of green baize under a bulb you wired to a dripping extension lead, its pans bright as coins.

A woman in a borrowed umbrella comes up the row with a paper bag of pears. She sets it on the pan and says they are a kilo, and that a kilo is what she paid for at the other end of the market, where the scales are newer. You do not argue. You nudge the beam until its thin line sits level with the little triangle at its centre, the pivot that carries the whole weight and never moves. The needle settles at the mark. The pears are nine hundred and eighty grams.
She offers you a ten-pound note to call it a kilo. You tell her your father made this balance from a ship's fitting, and that the triangle under the beam is the only honest part of it, because it holds still while everything else tips. She calls you stubborn. You say you have been called worse by better customers.
When she leaves she takes the pears but forgets the bag, and leaves one pear on the trestle, bruised on one side. You pick it up. It is heavier than you expected. You weigh it on the balance, and the beam holds level, as it always does, even when the rain is coming in under the awning and nobody is buying.
