Small inverted triangle outline on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small inverted triangle is drawn in a thin, even outline on a forearm. The linework is simple and clean, with no shading or fill. The ink is pale white, so the tattoo is faint against the skin, and the background is dark fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last pole of the Halloran tent came down on a wet Tuesday outside Wakefield, and you were the one who had to shout the count. Mrs Pyke had handed you the rigging book and a tin of chalk the week before, along with the rule that nobody touched the top rope until the triangle was drawn. It was an old rule, older than the tent and older than her. You didn't ask why. You dipped the chalk and drew three sides on the inside of your forearm, point down, the way your dad had shown you on the trapeze boards when you were nine.

The triangle meant the bar would hang true, the weight running down into the sawdust where the ring used to be. Nobody had ever explained why it was the wrong way up. Mrs Pyke said it was for the catchers, who always looked down when they were frightened. You thought that was a joke until the Thursday in Hull when the crowd was four people and a dog, and you climbed anyway, and the mark held you steady long enough to let go.

Now the lorries idle at the gate and the canvas lies folded like a sleeping animal. You crouch beside the last anchor bolt with a bucket of rainwater. The chalk has been on your skin all morning, the faintest line, and it sheds in the wet the way it always does. Mrs Pyke watches from the cab window. Let it go, she says. You drag your thumb across the point and watch it slide into the puddle, and the ground under that bolt is the only thing left that still knows where the ring was.
