The two boats were built to the same measure, so they should have sat the same on the water, but Ruairidh's red sail rode a hand's width higher than his brother's black one, and the old women on the slip at Sgeir Dubh took it as a sign of something they would not name.

The brothers went out past the skerries on a morning of still air to fish the deep ground beyond the Ravens. Iain steered by the notch in the far stack. Ruairidh ignored the brass compass their father had left them and trusted the swell, which he said came from under the boat and not over it. By noon a fog had closed over the water like a lid, and each man called the other's name and listened for an answer that sounded from the wrong side.

When the fog thinned, the two sails were turning slowly around each other, the red and the black edges crossing where the wind had caught them, and the boats were sitting in the same patch of grey water. They had sailed one circle all day. Ruairidh let his sail fall and rowed across to his brother, and together they hauled the net, heavy with herring, and shared it out on the thwart without a word about the compass.

That evening the cloths were pinned to the wall of the net loft, one red, one black, laid over each other so that their points crossed. The old women came up the slip to look and went back down again. The brothers left the sails that way, offset by a hand's width, and when anyone asked why they did not level them, they only said the sea had made its own measure.
