Ornamental elephant head line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A profile drawing of an elephant head and raised trunk, with the head and trunk filled with dense ornamental patterns of swirls, dots, scallops and paisley-like shapes. The linework is bold and uniform in black on a plain white background, with the trunk curling into a spiral at the tip. The composition is a single centred figure with no shading or colour.

The block had split along the grain the week before, so Ada Pilling spent three evenings filling the crack with lead and recutting the elephant from the boxwood's clean edge. Her father had always said an elephant wanted a patient hand. He had cut the first one himself in 1931, a beast with its trunk raised like a question, and the printers at the Bolton works had bought four hundred yards of it before the mill shut for the holidays.

Nobody on the floor remembered where the pattern came from. Some said a sailor off the Liverpool boats had brought the drawing back, folded inside a tin with a clasp. Others swore it was copied from a painted cloth in a pawnbroker's window. Ada only knew that every dot in the ear was a single tap of the gouge, that every scallop along the back needed a second, lighter cut, and that if she rushed one the whole animal looked nervous.
On the last night she set the block down to cool and sat with the lamp on her knees. The trunk ended in a tight spiral, which her father had said was the elephant thinking twice before it reached for anything. She turned the boxwood until the coil faced her and began the finest cuts at its centre, where the lines pinched together so close the gouge barely fit.
In the morning the first print came off the table clean, black on white, and the foreman held it to the window and frowned, then laughed. The elephant looked back at them with its curl intact. Ada wiped her hands on her apron and went home without waiting to see the rest of the run.
