Ornate feather tattoo across a foot
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a foot with an ornamental feather tattoo running across the top, from near the ankle towards the toes. The feather is filled with dotwork, mandala-like swirls, scrollwork and triangular patterns, drawn in fine black linework with solid black accents. The image is greyscale and centred on the foot against a shiny, dark background.

The feathers came up the shaft every morning on the cage, caught in the collars of the lamp men, and nobody in Coedfach asked where they came from. Hannah Probert swept them off the lamp room floor into a biscuit tin, because her late husband had told her a feather in a pit was bad luck unless it was kept. By the spring she had counted nineteen.

Her grandson Tomos, who drew on the backs of wage slips, sat at the kitchen table and copied the best of them, a long vane worked over with dots and little rings, with triangles climbing its spine like a ladder that had forgotten where it was going. "It's not a bird's," he said. "Somebody's drawn on it." Hannah told him the men below had time to draw in the dark, between the coal and the timber, and that a man with a pencil stub and a lamp could make a whole country out of a scrap of cardboard.
In April the cage came up with only one man on it, Dewi Rees, who had been working the east face with a shovel and a sketchbook. He had left the book on the landing. Every page was a feather, each more tangled than the last, and on the final one, in careful pencil, a note: keep the tin, Hannah, for the ones who come up late.
She did not cry. She carried the tin to the chapel and set it on the sill where the morning light fell across the lids, and when the next shift came up she counted again, and there were twenty.
