Black and grey neo-traditional owl tattoo on a calf, with a Deathly Hallows triangle and circle on one wing and the words Mischief Managed script along the tail.

Ornate owl with Deathly Hallows symbol on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl with a patterned face, swirling ornamental detail and outstretched wings fills the frame. One wing carries a triangle and circle symbol, a lightning bolt and small star marks, and the tail reads Mischief Managed in script. The bold outlines are filled with black ink and grey shading on pale skin, with no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owls came back to Lower Sallow the winter the causeway went under, and by the time you took the night post they had learned to fly lower than the gulls. Orla Penhallow handed you a wrist-slate and a satchel of sealed tubes on your first shift and gave you one rule: the owl reads its own tail before it trusts your hand. The script running down the feather is the seal. If the words are wrong, the bird keeps its cargo and bites.

The ferrymen on the Tide Road used the sign with the ring and the struck triangle to mark a house that would take a parcel and ask nothing. A lightning stroke across the wing meant the courier was carrying something hot. The little stars meant the tide was slack and the water would hold a boat steady for an hour. You learned to read them by lamplight with your gloves off and rain running down the back of your collar, until the marks stopped being pictures and became plain instructions.

One night a grey owl came in low over the sea wall with its wing torn at the triangle and its tail script smeared to nothing. The tube in its beak was addressed to you, in a hand you knew from the back of every ledger Orla ever signed. The date on the seal was ten years ahead of the year you were standing in.

You held the bird steady and traced the letters with your thumb until they came clear. You said the words out loud, the way she had taught you, and the tube split along its seam. Inside lay a brass key and one line in her quick slant: the water will be slack for you tomorrow, so go.
