Deathly Hallows symbol on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical ornamental design sits on the upper arm, centred on a Deathly Hallows symbol of a triangle, circle and vertical line. A winged motif crowns the piece, with flowers, leaves and scrolling acanthus-style forms filling the space around the symbol. The work is in black and grey, using bold outlines and shaded fills, and the design is arranged in a vertical column that follows the shape of the arm.

Ada had counted the lamp's turns for eleven nights before the stranger came up the causeway, a grey cloak folded over one arm and a length of ash wood under the other. The tide was making fast. He did not ask for shelter. He asked for the keeper, and when she told him her father had gone out in March and never come back, he nodded as though she had confirmed a sum.

"The men on the mainland sent me," he said. "They say this light was never lit by a man. It was lit by a debt." Ada laughed, then stopped, because the water had reached the second step and he had not moved to avoid it. He opened his coat and set three things on the wet stone of the threshold: the cloak, which he said would keep a person unseen from gulls and coastguards alike; the ash wand, which he said could mend any hull; and a pale stone, smooth as a gull's egg, which he turned once and held out to her.

"That one brings back what the sea took," he said. "Your father would walk up that path tonight."

Ada looked at the stone for a long time. Then she pressed it back into his palm. "Then the light goes out the day I'm dead, and the boats find the rocks. Take your debt elsewhere." He smiled, which she had not expected, and tucked the three things away one by one, the cloak last, and walked back along the causeway as the water closed behind him.

Ada climbed the two hundred and nine steps and wound the clockwork. Out past the reef a small gold glint rose, wheeled twice above the breakers and dropped into the dark like a coin into a well. She kept the glass clean until morning.
