Outlined and solid triangles on two forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms rest side by side against a white fabric background. On the lighter arm a small equilateral triangle is drawn in fine black outline, while on the darker arm a small solid black triangle is filled in. Both tattoos are simple, minimal and sit near the centre of each forearm, with the contrast between the outline and the solid shape as the main feature.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marguerite had painted the harbour signboards for thirty years, and the same triangle kept coming back to her. The fishing co-operative wanted a warning mark for the shoal off Carrack Point, a solid black triangle to be nailed to the mast of every boat that went out past the breakwater. Her brother Tobias wanted only the outline, a hollow shape he said let the sea pass through. They had argued about it over the tin of lamp oil since the spring.

On the morning the storm came up grey over the bay, she found Tobias on the slipway with a pot of black enamel and a brush too thin for the job. He was not painting a mast. He was tracing a triangle onto the old door of the net loft, and the line was hollow, thin as a hair. "Nobody reads an outline in a squall," she said. "They look for the mark that's full." He did not look up. "A full mark tells a man where the danger is. An empty one tells him where he's still allowed to go."

The boats came in before noon, all but the Lark. Marguerite walked the wet stones with the lantern and watched the dark water. When the Lark finally nosed round the point, the skipper climbed the slipway shaking. He said he had steered by the hollow mark on the loft door, which he could see through the gap in the harbour wall, and had not trusted the solid one on his own mast. The solid one only told him where the trouble was. The empty one showed him where the water still ran deep enough to take him through.

Marguerite stood a long while holding the lantern. Then she climbed back to the loft and, beside her brother's line, painted a second triangle and filled it in with a single stroke. "Both, then," she said when he came in with the rain on his shoulders. He laughed and said nothing, which from Tobias was as good as agreement.
