Camera outline with two hearts

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a camera drawn as a single black outline with a circular lens and a small top detail, with two open heart outlines floating above it. The linework is even and uniform in weight, with no shading or fill. The design is in black ink only and is centred in the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The camera-keeper of Hollin Fold had one rule older than the village well: a picture must hold what the heart saw, or it was only glass and tin. So when the miller's daughter, Edda Marrow, came up the hill with a box of brass and leather under her arm, the old woman at the top of the lane only nodded at the hearts she had sketched on the lid of it and said, the lens will be cold until you warm it.

Edda did not understand, and said so. She spent the summer walking the fold with the box, pointing it at the ploughed fields, at the crooked bridge, at her brother's goats eating the washing. Every plate came out grey and empty. The old woman looked at each one and handed it back without a word.

In the autumn the mill wheel broke, and Edda's father sat in the doorway with his hands on his knees and would not speak. She carried the box down to him and set it on the step. She did not take a picture of the wheel. She took one of his hands, open and dusty, resting on his knees, and she held the shutter a long while because she could not decide where the light should fall.

When the plate was washed, the hands were there, and behind them, faint as breath on glass, the shape of the doorway with the lamp lit inside. Her father looked at it for a long time. Then he got up, went to the wheel, and began to sort the broken spokes into a pile, one by one, the way she had seen him do when she was small.
