Two thin black outline heart tattoos on the hand and fingers, shown in a fine line style on a pair of hands.

Outline hearts on fingers and hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two panels show small black outline hearts on skin. In the top panel, one heart sits on the base of a finger and another on the side of a hand. In the bottom panel, a single larger heart spans two fingers pressed together. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the dark background keeps the ink as the focus.

The fair packs up on a Tuesday, and you have to find Marnie before the lorries leave the field at Hollin Common. She is sitting on the step of the generator van with a biro, and she grabs your wrist before you can speak. "Hold still," she says, and draws a small heart on the base of your first finger, then another on the side of your hand, pressing so hard the nib squeaks on your skin.

You have worked the coconut shy together for three summers, flipping rubber rings back onto the hooks and counting change into a tin that never quite balances. Marnie says the hearts are a sort of contract. Whatever town you end up in, you should be able to find the other one by touch in the dark, the way you find the ring-toss pegs at closing time. You tell her she's soft in the head. She tells you to shut up and let it dry.

Next morning the field is bare and the sky is the colour of wet cardboard. You pull a grey jumper over the rest of your life and climb into the cab of your uncle's van, heading south. At the first services you hold your hand up to the windscreen and see the ink has spread into soft grey blurs at the edges, like something left out in the rain.

That night, in a lay-by outside Swindon, you press your two hands together the way Marnie did on the last evening, when she drew a larger heart across the knuckles of both your fingers. The lines meet in the middle. You sit with the engine ticking and the lorries going past, and you wait for the phone to buzz, which it does, once, with a single red heart.
