The linework is thin and uniform with no shading, and the ink is black against light skin on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Osric had been told twice that the hearts in the margins of the psalter were idle vanity, and twice he had gone back to the scriptorium after vespers and drawn them again, small and black, no wider than a thumbnail. By Lent the prior's clerk had counted forty of them and written the number in the chapter book beside a note about candle wax.

Mabel Tench, the lay binder who crossed the causeway on Thursdays to stitch the gatherings, noticed first. She turned a leaf to the window and laughed under her breath, tracing one with a bent finger. "These aren't for God," she said. "Who sold you the oak galls?"

He could not lie to a woman with thread between her teeth. The galls came from Agnes at the ferry landing, who ground them on a flat stone every morning until the ink cut into the skin between her fingers and stayed there, a blue-black bruise in the webbing of each hand. Osric had never once drawn her hand. He drew the heart where the stain sat, on a page the prior would never think to open, and told himself that was a sin small enough to confess in a single breath.

At Michaelmas the prior turned the psalter to check the feast days and stopped at the Magnificat. He ran his thumb along the margin, slowly, past the heart, then paused over it. Osric waited for the rebuke. Instead the prior pressed his own thumb to the ink, lifted it, and looked at the faint grey print left on his skin before he closed the book without a word.
