Black fine line outline of two roses with a small script inscription on a woman's shoulder and collarbone area.

Outline roses and script on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with blonde hair, shown from the chin down, has a black outline tattoo of two roses across her shoulder, with the top of her face out of frame. The linework is thin and single-weight, with no shading, and a short line of cursive script runs from the roses toward the collarbone. The image has a warm, golden colour cast and a soft focus background with a mirror and floral fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The roses came in as an order slip in March, pinned to the bench with a drawing pin Nell had bent straight years ago. Outline only, the slip said, no shading, petals drawn like someone remembering them rather than looking at them. Two roses, and a line of writing that was not a name. Nell read it three times under the lamp in the packing shed and did not tell anyone what she thought it meant.

Her father had kept a daybook of every rose sold from the glasshouses at Sallowmere, and on the page for the spring of 1961 he had written a sentence in pencil, then rubbed most of it away with his thumb. Nell could still make out the ghost of it when the light came in low. She copied the surviving letters onto the back of the slip, loops careful, leaving gaps where the graphite had gone.

On the morning the customer came for the cuttings, the fog still lay in the lower field and the church clock had not yet struck eight. Nell wrapped the two stems in wet newsprint and handed them over without asking what they were for. The woman took them carefully, like something that might spill, and read the slip twice before she looked up.

"You copied it right," she said. "He never finished the sentence either."

Nell put the kettle on and let the question stay in the glasshouse with the steam, where roses have always done best when left alone.
