Outline triangles on the soles of two feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are raised with their soles facing the camera, against a cream wall decorated with dark triangle shapes. Each sole carries a small, thin black outline of an upward-pointing triangle, one slightly tilted. The fine, unshaded linework and plain background keep the focus on the tattoos.

Every season he marked his apprentices before they went up. He sat them on an upturned crate in the bothy, took a fine nib and a pot of Indian ink, and drew a small upright triangle on the sole of each foot. So the hill knows who's walking on it, he said, and nobody laughed, because his hands were steady and the ink was cold. Mine came out perfect. We came down the scree path with the cloud still thick at our shoulders. Halfway, the mist thinned enough to show the valley, and I looked back up the slope. Our footprints in the grey mud had stamped a line of pale triangles behind us, one after another, each pointing at the summit we had just left, as if the hill had taken the mark and kept it.

Tomas stopped and looked back for a long while. Then he tilted his boot against a stone and set it beside his own print, and the two lined up as if they had always meant to. Aldous lit his pipe at the bottom of the path and wrote the bearing in his book: one line, three points, a station found.
