Fine line constellation on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of joined dots linked by thin straight lines forms an angular, zigzag shape on the lower forearm. The linework is delicate and even, and the ink is a dark blue-black with no shading. The forearm is photographed against a plain beige backdrop with the hand raised at the top of the frame, leaving the tattoo as the focal point at the lower centre.

The pickup had been dead for forty minutes when you admitted the phone had no signal and the road ran off in both directions without a single light. Your father had taught you the sky the way other fathers taught knots, so you sat on the tailgate with Ruth beside you and found the zigzag he used to call the Kettle Stair. Seven stars, bent once at the middle, as if someone had folded the sky to fit in a coat pocket.

"Which one's the top?" Ruth asked, squinting. Her thumbnail was chipped from the jack handle, and she kept flicking the dust off her knee as if it might bite.
"Start where it's brightest and work down. Then go left at the bend." You traced it in the air with one finger, joining the dots the way he had joined them for you on the windscreen with a bar of soap. The old drovers, he said, had hung that shape over the wells so a man who lost the track could find the turn by counting the kinks. Whether that was true, you never checked. You only remembered the way his voice dropped when he got to the bend.
A pair of lights swung up over the rise a long way off, low and steady, and Ruth made a small sound that was nearly a laugh. You stood up on the tailgate and kept your hand raised, fingers spread, the way you would wave at a bus you were not sure had seen you. Above you the Kettle Stair held its angle against the black, unbothered, pointing the way it always had.
