Oven mitt and rolling pin with Bake or Die banner

Traditional · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A pink checked oven mitt sits behind a wooden rolling pin, with a cream banner across the middle reading BAKE OR DIE in black capitals. The design uses bold black outlines and flat fills, with magenta and darker plum tones on the mitt and brown shading on the pin. It is photographed close up on pale skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

'Mitt's on the hook, love, and the pin's by your elbow, so stop looking at the clock.' Mrs Pryce said it without turning from the trays, the same way she had said it every morning since you were fourteen and had burnt the first batch of teacakes in the wrong oven.

The bakery on Thistle Row was still dark except for the strip light over the bench. Flour lay on everything like frost. You rolled the dough thin, the way she had shown you, lifting and turning, until the pin's brown grain had gone glossy under your palms. The mitt hung by the oven door, quilted in pink and plum, scorched at one thumb from your first week when you grabbed a tray too early. She had stitched a patch over the damage and said a good mitt was a mended one.

Under the proving cupboard sat a tin of old recipe cards in her cramped hand. Halfway down the pile, a card for shortbread had BAKE OR DIE pressed into one corner, a joke she never explained. You read it twice and put it back, because the words on the chalkboard were the only instruction she had ever needed to give.

At ten past five she slid the first tray into the oven without looking, as she had done for forty years, and said nothing. Outside, the window on Thistle Row was turning the colour of milk. You wiped your hands on your apron and reached for the next lump of dough.
