Sugar skull cupcake with pink frosting
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with swirled pink frosting and multicoloured sprinkles, with a sugar skull with a red bow rising from the top. The skull has yellow and orange floral detailing and a shaded grey eye socket, while the cupcake case is rendered in grey with vertical lines. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills dominate the design, set against plain skin.

The order slip said one cupcake, pink frosting, sprinkles on the lot, and a sugar skull on top with a red bow. Maud Lacey had underlined the bow twice. Dev read it aloud to the kitchen as if it were a dare, because nobody ordered a skull in October without a reason, and in a seaside bakery the reason was usually a funeral.

Dev piped the skull by hand from a bag of white royal icing, the way his nan had taught him, giving it a grin that sat a little lopsided on the left. He painted the eye sockets grey and ringed the cheeks with marigold dots. Maud came in at four, as she had every first of November since the bakery opened, wearing the same green mac and paying in coins she counted onto the counter one at a time. She took the box without a word and left a folded note under the sugar bowl.
The note was for Dev. It said the cupcake was for Walter, who had sat on the bench by the harbour wall every evening for forty years and had eaten a pink cake there on the day their daughter was born. Walter had died in the spring. Maud could no longer walk that far, and would Dev be so kind. He found the bench at dusk, with the wind coming off the water and the pier lights switching on one bulb at a time.
He set the box on the slats and opened it. The frosting had already begun to soften in the sea air, and the little skull had slipped a fraction, its bow tipped toward the water. A gull landed on the armrest and studied the sprinkles with great interest. Dev, who had wanted one all afternoon, left them for the gull and walked home without his jacket.
