Cupcake and chef's hat shield on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bold colour tattoo shows a pink-iced cupcake in a blue wrapper, set on a red and yellow shield with a whisk and rolling pin crossed behind it. A grey chef's hat sits above, framed by pink scrollwork and a pale blue lace doily. Thick black outlines and saturated colour give it a bright, graphic finish.

Marjorie Pell had been asked to paint the crest for the Hollin Street Bakehouse three times, and three times the committee had sent it back. "Too much like a pub sign," said Councillor Dyer. "Not enough like a bakery," said his wife. So on the Friday before the Harvest Fair, Marjorie stood on a stepladder in the back room with a tin of red gloss, a jar of pink, and the blue of her late mother's lace tablecloth pinned to the wall for reference.

The chef's hat went on first, because Jonah the baker insisted it was the only thing anyone would read from the road. She gave it three coats of white and a grey shadow like a cloud about to rain. The whisk and rolling pin she crossed behind the shield, and she scorched one end of the pin a little, the way the old one had been scorched when the oven caught it years ago. Then the cupcake, which took the whole afternoon. The icing was the hard part. She piped each rosette slowly, every one a small argument with the nozzle.
At six, Jonah came through wiping his hands and stopped in the doorway. He said nothing for a long time. Then he asked whether the cupcake was meant to be the kind his daughter bought from the petrol station, the ones in foil cups. Marjorie told him it was meant to be the kind nobody ever managed to make right at home. He laughed, and she saw that she had painted exactly what he had been trying to bake since the shop opened.
The committee approved it without a word of complaint. They hung it over the door the next morning, and by noon the queue ran to the corner, people pointing up at the pink swirl as though it might be lifted down and eaten.
