Owl and skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl with detailed feather shading sits on top of a realistic skull, with its wing spread down the right side. Small leaves appear at the base of the skull. The work uses soft grey shading and fine hatching for texture, with no colour ink, and the forearm is shown against a green top and a tiled floor.

Third night of the thaw and the owl has brought me another button. Brass, stamped with a crown worn smooth the way the old coins went before the mint closed. Mother says Hesk fetches from the bell tower because that is where the owl was raised, but I have seen it drop down into the sump beneath St Ebbe's and come back with a thimble in its beak.

The skull sits in the window of the tallow shop, where Father kept it after the sexton sold it to him for a shilling. It has no lower jaw worth the name, only a grin of broken teeth. Every dusk Hesk lands on its crown and turns its head one way, then the other, watching the lane as though the dead man were still counting carts. I used to think it was guarding him. Now I think it is keeping a tally.
Last night the owl dropped a folded paper at my feet, damp and inked in a hand I knew. It was my own name in Father's script, and below it a date eleven years gone. I read it twice by the lamp. Then I went to the window, where the skull was grinning in the candlelight and the owl had flown off, and found the lower jaw lying on the sill, bright as a new coin.
I have fitted the jaw back on, and the bird has not come since. The lane is quiet, and the skull keeps its teeth shut for once, which is more than Father ever managed.
