Skull and wolf realism on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic skull with dark eye sockets and droplets of water sits above a detailed wolf head with its eyes and fur shaded in fine detail. The tattoo is shaded in black and grey with soft gradients and strong contrast across the skull and wolf. It fills the forearm from the wrist to the elbow, photographed against green turf and paving.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The well at Corran Flat had been dry since the spring the Mallory brothers fell out over the cattle, and nobody on the desert road could say who had last drawn water from it. Old Hesketh Wray walked forty miles from the rail halt with a tin cup on a string and a grey dog at his heel that nobody remembered inviting.

The dog would not drink from the cup. It sat at the lip of the well and looked down, and when Hesketh leaned over he saw a skull lying in the dust at the bottom, its eye holes black as tar and three drops of water beaded on its brow like mercury. "Who keeps the water?" he asked. The dog turned its torn ear towards him, and the skull's jaw shifted, though the bone was as dry as a biscuit.

They bargained the way such things do. The skull wanted a name spoken aloud at every dusk, a name nobody had said since the cattle war. Hesketh gave his mother's name, and the water rose up the shaft with a sound like a held breath let go. The dog drank first, then lay down against his boots and did not leave.

Hesketh is said to have walked the road to the coast with the dog and a full waterskin, and every dusk after that he said his mother's name over the well. When road-men come to Corran Flat now, they find the cup hanging full on its string and a grey dog asleep beside the stone, and nobody asks whose dog it is.
