The owl is back on the branch over the fish market wall again. Your grandfather called it the Pilot, because it sat there every night the boats were out and never flew off until they came round the breakwater. I thought that was an old wives' tale until last Tuesday, when the wind got up and the Maid of Ness was four hours late. I stood at the window with the kettle going cold, and there it was, turning its head very slowly from the lamp to the water and back again.

Mrs Pardoe from the chandlery says it's only hunting mice. Perhaps. She also says I should stop writing to you about birds, so consider yourself warned.

Your mother asked me to send the two silver hearts you left in the drawer. I found them under the tide tables with the little glyphs stamped on them, the crab for you and the scales for Sam. I've pinned them to the sketch by the door, because it seemed right they should hang where the owl could see them.

The boat came in at dawn. Sam was at the rail, shouting something rude about the weather, and I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the step. When I looked up the owl had gone, and the branch was bare except for one small white blossom that hadn't been there before.

Come home at Easter if you can. The kettle is always on.
