Owl on a letter with castle on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A grey owl with amber eyes perches on an orange envelope that has a red wax seal and a banner reading Hogwarts. Behind it, a blue castle with lit windows rises through purple clouds, and three floating candles sit above the owl. The bold black outlines and smooth colour blends give it a painterly finish, and the design is centred on the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had driven the cheese sellers under their awnings by ten, and Maud Pellow was still arguing with a loose pole on her wax stall when the owl came down onto the canvas above her head. It shook the water from its feathers in a grey spray and looked at her with eyes the colour of strong tea. Tied to its leg was an envelope the shade of toffee, sealed with a red disc that had a tower pressed into it.

"I haven't any bread," Maud said, because nobody had ever told her what one said to a post owl. The bird stretched out its foot and waited. She untied the cord, and the envelope was heavier than paper ought to be. Her name was written across it in green ink, both halves of it, the way only her grandmother had ever written it.

Above the market, three small lights slid down out of the cloud. They were candles in iron rings, bobbing like lanterns on a boat, and they hung over the stalls without falling. The fishmonger stopped gutting his mackerel. A boy with a barrow of onions forgot to push it. Through the cloud behind them Maud could just see a castle with its windows lit, every one of them a gold square in the dark.

She broke the seal with her thumb. Inside, in the same green ink, it said that the term began at the next full moon and that her place had been kept since the day she was born. Maud folded the letter, tucked it into her coat, and left the wax pot cooling on the table. When she looked up, the owl was already gone, and the candles were going out one by one, like a town switching off its lamps for the night.
