Owl perched on an open book
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a standing owl with a brown and tan feathered body, its head turned to one side, perched on the edge of a yellow-ochre open book or page. The linework is loose and sketchy with darker outlines and light shading across the feathers. The palette is limited to browns, tan and yellow against pale skin on the forearm.

The returns box at Pennick's Hut had been empty since the frost, so Nell Varley was surprised to find the owl sitting on its lid, a fat tawny thing with feathers the colour of toasted bread, its head cocked at a library book it had dragged out through the slats. The pages were open to a chapter about tides.

Nell had kept the hut for three winters, long enough to know the wood took things back. Hares took gloves. Foxes took the sandwich paper from the bench. The owl took books, but it never tore them, and each one came back a little more dog-eared at the corners, as if someone had been reading it slowly by lamplight somewhere under the oaks.
On the Thursday, a page lay folded in the box, soft with rain and written in a hand she didn't know. The writer asked whether the tide tables in volume four were right, because they had been waiting for the sea to come up the Fenmoor road and had lost count of the weeks. Nell checked the tables. They were wrong by a fortnight. She wrote the correction in pencil underneath and slid the page back through the slats.
The next morning the book was gone and so was the owl. On the lid lay a single tan feather, and beneath her pencil note someone had added, in faint ink and a careful hand, thank you, the same neat script Nell used for the date stamp.
