Owl with glasses on an envelope behind the ear
Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small owl wearing round glasses sits on top of an envelope with a red wax-style seal. The design uses bold black outlines with grey shading on the owl's feathers and light fills on the envelope. Touches of yellow in the eyes and red on the seal make it mostly black and grey with some colour, and it is shown close up on skin with the ear in frame.

Pull your chair in, love, the fire's low and the owl won't wait on anyone's comfort. You've come to hear about the Hallowmere wedding, the one the post brought. Old Mabry Tallow kept the letters at the crossroads then, and he had a barn owl called Sexton who wore a pair of brass-rimmed spectacles bought off a travelling optician. Sexton could read. Nobody believed it until he proved it, sorting the bundle on the gatepost with his head tilted just so.

The letter came sealed in red wax, pressed with a ring the size of a thimble, addressed to Constance Greave at the mill. Her father had forbidden the match with Eli Starling, the weaver's boy, so the post was the only road left open. Sexton would not take the mouse Mabry offered him. He sat there ruffling his feathers until Constance came down the lane in her apron, took the letter, and broke the seal with her thumb. Inside were three lines in Eli's hand and a date: the chapel, the Sunday after the first frost.
Her father came down with the shotgun, meaning to see the owl off the gate. Sexton looked at him over the top of those spectacles for a long, unblinking moment. The old man lowered the gun, muttered something about bad luck, and went home to sulk. He did not stop the wedding, and he did not come to it either.
Come Sunday, the whole village crowded into the chapel, and there on the lychgate sat Sexton, the glass catching the candlelight. When the vows were said, he dropped a fresh envelope onto the altar cloth. Nobody ever learned who had written it, and the seal was never broken. Mabry always swore it was addressed to the next young couple in Hallowmere who needed a bit of courage.
