Padfoot and Moony script tattoos on ankles

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two black script words sit on the back of a pair of feet, the left reading Padfoot and the right reading Moony. A Deathly Hallows triangle symbol is drawn above each word in clean black linework with no shading. The skin is light and the background shows a wooden floor and a pale doorway, keeping the tattoos as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry had been cancelled twice that week, so Nell Penhale spent the afternoon on the harbour wall with a tin of pencils and her brother's old sketchbook, drawing the same black dog over and over. Each page showed him differently: shaggy at the ears, lean in the flank, always slipping off the edge of the paper as if he had somewhere better to be.

Tobias said the dog was a fiction. The pair of them had made him up at nine, along with a stag who could never keep still and a thin boy who went quiet every full moon, and they had sworn on a bent sixpence to keep the three of them secret. Tobias now sold insurance in Penzance and kept the sixpence in a drawer. Nell kept hers on a cord around her neck, and it had never once stopped being warm.

On Thursday the ferry finally ran. The purser, a man with ink on his cuffs, asked for names for the manifest. Nell gave him two: Padfoot and Moony. He squinted at the spelling, then at the triangle she had drawn beside them, three lines and a circle inside, the same mark scratched on the chapel door since before anyone could remember. "And the third?" he asked. "Nobody ever books him," she said. "He just turns up."

The crossing was flat and grey. Somewhere past the breakwater, Nell felt a nudge at her heel and looked down at nothing but salt-wet planks and a patch of sun. She smiled and let it be.
