Pair of stylised wings design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a symmetrical pair of wings drawn in black and grey, with long, curved primary feathers tapering to points at the top. Feather edges are built up with dark shading and fine strokes, giving the wings depth and a soft gradient from dark tips to lighter areas. The wings sit on a plain pale grey background with two long vertical lines extending below them.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for the front of you. You want the story of the gate at Hollin Pass? Then listen. Every guard who ever stood in that hut was told the same thing: the two wings carved over the lintel face each other because they were a pair that never got to touch. A mason called Tomas cut them the winter his brother walked over the mountain and didn't come down the other side.

He worked by a lamp, and the story says the feathers were so fine he kept it burning three nights to get the edges right. When the lintel went up, the customs clerk in the hut, a woman named Agathe with ink on her cuffs, stamped every passport that came through. She swore that on nights when the wind came off the snow, the stone wings lifted a finger's width, enough to hear them creak.
One March a boy came to the barrier with no papers, only a tin whistle and a pair of boots two sizes too big. Agathe looked at the lintel, then at his boots, and asked what he was carrying across. He said, "Only my brother's shoes, missus. He left them on the far side." She lifted the barrier. The stone wings did not move, but the snow beneath them had melted in two long strips running straight down to the road, the way the iron poles stand below the carving, and the boy walked down them without once looking back.
