Palm tree and embracing figures on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a palm tree growing from a striped, rounded island, with several dark-haired figures tangled together in an embrace at its base. The linework is a clean, dark outline with flat fills and little or no shading. Pink, yellow, blue and green ink dominate, and the design sits centrally on the upper leg against a blue fabric and pink wall backdrop.

The island had been Marguerite's idea, a joke she made at the hen weekend when the gin ran out and they were sprawled across the sofa in Leeds like a heap of laundry. A palm tree on a striped ring of sand, she said, and all of us stuck on it like limpets. Nobody thought she meant it. Now the four of them were crammed into the back of a borrowed Volvo on the way to the registry office in Hebden Bridge, and the bride had her feet up on the dashboard, bare toes wiggling against the windscreen.

Isabel kept checking the rings in the little velvet box on her knee. Only one of them had to fit, she said, because the others were promises, not jewellery. Ruth laughed so hard she had to wind the window down. Outside, the moors went past in squares of green and rust, and the sky over them was the sort of pink that looks painted on.

When they reached the car park, nobody got out. The bride said she wanted one more minute, just the four of them, the way they used to sit on the bathroom floor before a night out, backs against the bath, arms locked round knees. So they stayed there, pressed together in the warm car, until the clock on the dashboard ticked past the hour and the registrar came out the side door waving a clipboard, shouting that they were late and that there was a queue of couples behind them.
