Panda face tattoo on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A simple panda face is tattooed on the forearm, with two round ears, two dark eye patches with small highlights, and a black nose and mouth. The design uses bold, solid black fills with clean edges and no shading. The pale skin and dark ink stand out against the green and navy checked fabric behind the arm.

Come closer, all of you, and mind the sawdust, because the floor of the Palais has never once been swept clean. It was 1953 and the band was three brothers from Rhyl who had never heard of pandas, but Mrs Hollis had booked them for the Easter dance regardless. The thing about a dance hall is that anybody can walk in. That spring a panda walked in. Nobody saw where it came from. It had two round ears, black as a wet slate, and a pair of eyes ringed in ink, and it stood by the cloakroom holding a single ticket between finger and thumb.

Now the girls wanted to dance with it, and the boys wanted to see it dance, but the panda only shook its head and sat down on the edge of the stage with its back to the piano. It watched the couples turn under the bulbs. Every time the band stopped, it leaned forward a little, the way you do when you want to be asked.

Nobody asked. So on the last waltz, old Mr Dunn, who had two left feet and a bad hip, hauled himself up, bowed low and held out his hand. The panda looked at him for a long time. Then it stood, and the two of them went round the floor so slowly that the rest of the room stopped to watch, and the band played on without being told.

When the lights came up, the stage was empty except for a single black nose print on the glass of the fire door, and a ticket stub that said ADMIT ONE, and nothing else, which is how you know it was a good night. Mind your feet on the way out.
