Baby panda tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon baby panda sits with one paw raised and the other resting on its body, shown in black ink with grey shading. The rounded lines and soft shading give the panda a rounded, plump form. The tattoo sits alone on the ankle against a plain, pale skin background, with a dark surface and a white cloth visible at the edges of the photo.

The panda had been in the hold since Gloucester, wedged between a crate of Dutch clogs and a sack of rock salt, and nobody aboard the Mabel Ruth would own up to putting it there. I found it on the third morning, sitting in an inch of bilge water as though it had paid for the seat, one paw lifted high like a passenger hailing a cab.

My father wanted it off at the next lock. Nell, who was eleven and had already named it Biscuit, wanted to keep it. I wanted to know how a cub that size had slipped past the fair people at Stourport without anyone noticing. We argued across the tiller while the water rose and fell in the lock, and all the while the panda kept that paw in the air, wobbling a little, waving at nobody in particular.

At Tardebigge the lock-keeper leaned out of his hut to shout about our speed, saw the cub on the cabin roof, and went quiet. He lifted his own hand. The panda waved back with its one good paw, and the lock-keeper laughed so hard he had to sit down on the step. After that the gates opened for us without a word, and every keeper along the canal did the same, until my father stopped scowling and began to wave too.

We tied up at Diglis just after dusk, the cub asleep against the coal bucket with its paw still raised. Dad lifted the lantern and said it could stay, provided it did its share of the washing up. Nell gave it a name that finally stuck. Biscuit never once put that arm down, not even in its sleep, and I have never quite decided whether it was saying hello or goodbye.
