Panda silhouette on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black tattoo of a panda sits on the side of a pale ankle, with the head turned towards the viewer and a body curving behind it. The design is made of flat, filled black shapes with no visible shading or fine detail. The ankle fills the centre of the frame, with a grey fabric cuff at the top left and a dark carpet behind.

Dear Ruth,

You will not believe what Mei-Lin did on Saturday. Mr Hollis from the council had booked the Starlight Ballroom for the zoo's charity dance, and the committee wanted the panda there as a novelty, so I walked her down Queen Street on a lead no thicker than a bootlace, with a crowd of schoolboys trailing behind us like gulls after a trawler.
The band struck up a slow foxtrot and the dancers parted to make room. I expected her to sulk, or to start eating the paper bamboo the committee had strewn about the floor. Instead she rose onto her back legs, shuffled across to the bandstand, and put her black-patched arms around my waist as though she had been doing it all her life. Her head settled against my shoulder. Her great soft weight swayed to the time. Nobody laughed. The fellow on the trumpet forgot his next note.
Afterwards, Mr Hollis said the committee would be writing to the newspapers, and I said I expected they would. I didn't tell him what I said to her on the walk home, under my breath: that I was glad she had picked me to lead. I'll be honest, Ruth, I have not danced with anyone since Dad's funeral, and I am not sure I would have started again if she hadn't asked.
Write soon, and tell Tom his fishing rod is still in my shed.
Love, Frank
