Cartoon panda holding bamboo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A seated baby panda with large round ears, glossy eyes and a small nose holds a bamboo stalk across its body, with another stalk lying across the lower left. The fur is rendered with soft, fuzzy shading in black and grey, with highlights on the eyes, paws and bamboo joints. The design sits centrally on the skin with plain background skin around it.

The lift in Hollins House had been broken since the spring, so every trip up to the ninth floor meant seventy-two concrete steps and a rest on the landing where someone had scratched a crown into the paint. Mum said we should be grateful for the exercise. I was grateful for Pickle, mostly, because he was the only thing in our flat that never complained about the stairs.

Dad won him at the hook-a-duck stall on the Sunday market, spending his last pound coin and most of his patience. Pickle was bigger than a cushion and smelt faintly of candyfloss, and he sat on the windowsill with a length of bamboo across his knees, nicked from the planter outside the community centre. Mum asked where it came from. Dad said it was for the view. Pickle looked out over the car park and the bins and the wet grey football pitch as if he were waiting for a bus that never came.
In October the lift finally clanked back into life, and the whole block cheered from the stairwell like it was a football goal. Mrs Adeyemi from four rode it down first with her shopping trolley, nodding at everyone like a queen. I was too busy dragging Pickle out of the window to be dignified about it. I carried him into the steel box with his bamboo held upright, and the doors shut slowly on the smell of bleach and the crown on the landing wall.
At the ground floor, the doors opened on the car park and a rare bit of sun. Pickle's bamboo caught the light, and for once I didn't look back at the stairs.
