Baby panda holding a red balloon on a wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon baby panda with large round eyes and raised paws is shown in a small, rounded composition, with a red balloon tied by a thin line to one of its paws on the left. The panda uses soft black and white markings with orange-brown shading on its belly and back, and the balloon has a bold red fill with a dark outline. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred background of dark clothing.

Late August had left the apples in Hollin's orchard heavy and blushing, and the wasps were drunk on the windfalls. Dilys Hollin saw the balloon first, a red teardrop snagged in the crown of the old Bramley tree. Hanging beneath it by one paw was a small plush panda, its round black eyes fixed on the back porch as if it expected someone to come out and apologise.

Her grandson Kit came across the grass with a wheelbarrow and no sympathy. "It's only a toy, Gran. Somebody will come back for it." Nobody came. The Harvest Fete had closed at four, and the coconut shy had been packed into a van somewhere on the Bolton road. Dilys fetched the long pole with the wire cage and set her jaw. "It's been up there since Saturday. It's had enough of being a lost thing."

The ladder wobbled on the soft ground. Kit held the foot while she reached, the cage snagged on a spur, and a wasp went straight for her ear. When the string finally came free the balloon lurched upward, and Kit yelled and dived, catching the panda as it lifted. They sat in the long grass with it between them, sticky with sap and one ear bent flat. Kit held the balloon out to her. "Let it go? It'll find its own way home."

Dilys shook her head and tied the string to the handle of the wheelbarrow, then knotted the panda's paw to the same loop so they travelled together. Kit pushed the barrow up to the house, grumbling about the weight. Later the panda sat on the kitchen windowsill above the sink, the red balloon bobbing against the glass, and each morning Dilys gave it a look before she filled the kettle. Some things, she decided, had earned a windowsill.
