A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cub had been found wedged in a drainpipe behind the bamboo cooperative, too thin to stand, and the keeper said it would not eat until someone sat with it. So for nine nights Aunt Ruyi sat on an upturned crate with a bowl of mashed pear in her lap and hummed the same three notes until the little creature stopped shaking. Nobody in the valley thought it would last the winter.

It did. By spring it had learned that the grey rain shower at the top of the ridge meant lunch, and that the boulder by the stream made a good seat for sulking. It also learned to climb the old pine that leaned over the wash-house roof, which frightened the goats and delighted the children who came up the path every Saturday to watch it sulk and climb.

In the autumn the cub went to the reserve on the mountain, where there were other pandas and proper paddocks with mud that was not made of goat dung. Ruyi carried the crate up herself. At the gate the keeper handed her a photograph that someone had taken on the ridge, a pale round face half hidden in dark fur, looking straight back down the lens as if it had known all along who was holding the camera.

She pinned it above the stove, and for years afterwards, whenever the rain came down over the bamboo, she still hummed the three notes, just in case anyone was listening from the hill.
