The panda had sat on the top shelf of Sid's hoopla stall since the spring fair, and every child who came past pointed at it and then asked for the goldfish instead. Sid said it was the eyes. Too big, too wet. Nobody wants a prize that looks like it might cry if you miss.

I was the one who had to dust it on Saturdays, so I got to know its face better than anyone. The brows were arched as if it had just heard something surprising, and the pink on its cheeks had faded to the colour of a boiled sweet. When the rain came sideways across Little Sealby that October and the Waltzer lights went dim in the puddles, the stall stood empty except for me and that panda.

A girl of about six came up the gangway holding her mum's hand, but her mum was already walking away towards the car park, shouting something about the bus. The girl stopped under the awning and looked at the panda, and then at me, and I could see she had no money and no idea what to do with her face. So I took the panda down and gave it to her without a word, the way you'd hand someone a lost glove.

Sid counted his takings in the van that night and never noticed the gap. I wiped the rain from the shelf and found it bare, and somehow the wood looked less like a shelf than a small, brave place where something had been kept for a while.
