Sit down, love, the tea's stewed but it's hot. You want the one about Ivy Mabry and the lift that broke on Calder Ward?

Ivy came on nights the winter the lift went out, and she kept her husband's old pencil in her apron pocket because Tomas had drawn her a heart with it on a paper napkin the first week they met. He'd used the bass clef for the curl and two dots for the ends, and he swore it was the only love letter a musician could write without getting sacked. Mostly she didn't think of him in the small hours. Mostly she was counting obs and listening to the drip stands click along the corridor.

Then a man in bed nine asked for music. He had a radio with a dead dial and a daughter who had stopped visiting. Ivy had nothing to give him, so she sat on the edge of the chair and hummed the bottom line of a Bach suite Tomas used to play in the cellar, those low notes that go down like a staircase in the dark. The man shut his eyes. The dots on the page, she told him, are where you breathe.

In the morning she found a sketch tucked behind the sharps bin, the same curl and the same two dots, done in biro on the back of a drugs chart. Nobody on the ward would own to it. The night porter only smiled and said he'd heard someone humming at the end of bed nine and thought he ought to draw it down before it got away from him. Ivy folded the paper into her pocket beside the pencil, and that was the first night the lift stayed broken and she didn't mind.
