Panda tattoo on the side ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small black panda sits on the side of the torso, shown in a simple bold outline with solid black fill and no shading. The ink is set against pale skin, and the panda is the only tattoo element visible in the frame. The photo is taken from behind and to the side, with a hand across the hip, a lime waistband and dark leggings beside a stone wall.

The lost property office at Crewe closes at four, and Marjorie Pell had never once in thirty-one years been late locking it. So when the man in the reflective waistcoat came hurrying down the platform with a cardboard box under one arm, I told him we were shut and he could leave it on the bench like everyone else. He didn't leave it. He opened it. Inside, sitting in a nest of old timetables, was a stuffed panda with one ear chewed off and a label reading PLATFORM 4, SUNDAY, 6.12PM.

"Found it on the 6.12 to Holyhead," he said. "Been on the train twice since. Somebody keeps putting it back on the seat when I've gone." I told him trains don't have opinions. He said that was what he'd thought until the panda had started turning up in the buffet carriage with a teabag tucked in its paw.
We spent the next half hour going through the log book. Every entry for the last fortnight said the same thing in a different hand: small black bear, last seen in a lady's coat pocket, last seen on a bench, last seen waiting for a train that had already gone. Nobody had ever claimed it. Nobody had ever reported it missing. I began to suspect the panda had been travelling on purpose, hopping from carriage to carriage, looking for someone it had lost years ago on the wrong side of a barrier.
At five to four I stamped the form, wrote it down as found, and handed the man his receipt. The panda stayed on my desk. In the morning there was a ticket tucked under its arm, for a single to Llandudno, valid for one journey only, and I have no idea who put it there.
